In October 2009 Westmeath County Council was successful in securing a grant from the Gateways and Hubs European Regional Development Fund Grants Scheme for up to 60% of the funding required to create approximately 20km of high quality cycle lanes around the town of Mullingar. Eight key routes were identified and three of those – the Delvin Road, Dublin Road and Ballinderry Road – are now open to cyclists. Work will continue over the coming months on the other five routes, Pipers Boreen to Dublin Road via the Canal; Millmount Road; Ashe Road to College Street via Carey Bridge; Carey Bridge to Harbour Street via Green Road, and, Harbour Street to Castle Street.
