R916 Garrycastle Bridge Realignment Scheme
The existing R916 at Garrycastle, Athlone is an important distributor road that connects the N55 at Cornamaddy with the R446 Old Dublin Road. The R916 has been realigned over most of its length with the exception of the section in the vicinity of Garrycastle Railway Bridge (OB 6103). The proposed R916 Garrycastle Bridge Realignment Scheme is intended to complete the upgrading of the R916. The scheme comprises 700 meters, approximately, of new single carriageway road, connecting to the existing road at two roundabout junctions, one at the southern scheme extent and one at the northern scheme end. It will cross the railway line from Mullingar to Athlone on a new bridge over the railway. The scheme will also include the provision of new cycleways, footpaths & lighting along the proposed road.
